Two of the brightest young coaches in the Memphis area will lead the teams in the 11th Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Football Game. Chris Wiley, the head coach at Arlington High School, will coach the Blue Team. East High School head coach Marcus Wimberly will coach the Red Team.

The All-Star Game will feature the top 84 players from Memphis City Schools, Shelby County Schools and private schools within Memphis, Shelby County, Fayette County and Tipton County.

The game will be played Saturday, December 8 at Memphis University School. Kickoff is at 2:30 pm. Tickets cost $10, for kids 6 and under the cost is $5. The All-Star Game will also be broadcast on radio by WHBQ Sports 56.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl All-Star Game has become one of the marquee events on the local high school scene,” said AutoZone Liberty Bowl Executive Director Steve Ehrhart. “With two of the most successful young coaches from Memphis and Shelby County leading the teams, we will continue the tradition of excellence the All-Star Game has created over the past decade.”

Chris Wiley is in his ninth year as head coach of the Arlington Tigers. Prior to Arlington, Wiley had coaching stints at Dyersburg and Cordova. In 2004, he was hired to start the football program at Arlington. The Tigers’ first full season of varsity competition was 2007. In five seasons of varsity play, Wiley has led Arlington to the playoffs four times. In 2009, Arlington had an undefeated 10-0 regular season record. Wiley has a career record of 43-22.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl All-Star Game gives us a chance to showcase the abundance of talent in the Memphis area,” said Wiley. “It gives many seniors one last opportunity to go out as a winner in their final high school game if they didn’t win the state championship. It’s a great way to kick-off the activities for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.”

Marcus Wimberly is in his seventh season as head coach of the East Mustangs. Wimberly is a former East and University of Miami star. He was selected in the 5th round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Before taking over the East program as head coach in 2006, Wimberly served as assistant coach at East for four seasons. He has led the Mustangs to four playoff appearances. Wimberly has a career record of 35-37.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl All-Star Game gives the fans an opportunity to see local talent that, in many cases, they have only heard or read about,” said Wimberly. “Because of the exposure the All-Star Game has created over the past ten years, there has been an increase in appreciation for the overall talent that Memphis and Shelby County have at all levels.”

The All-Star teams will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of area head coaches and other football analysts.

Each team will have 42 players, who will be selected from the following schools. Each player must have the recommendation of his coach. Players will be selected on the basis of his character, on-field achievement and classroom performance.
