The Beach Boys to Perform at AutoZone Liberty Bowl and Receive Bowl’s Outstanding Achievement Award

This year’s AutoZone Liberty Bowl Football Classic will offer plenty of "Good Vibrations" and "Fun, Fun, Fun" for everyone as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member The Beach Boys bring a bit of California to Memphis. The Beach Boys will perform at the AutoZone Liberty Bowl President’s Gala and headline the halftime show of the 47th AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be played Saturday, December 31 at Noon.

Captained by Mike Love, The Beach Boys will receive the Bowl’s Outstanding Achievement Award at the President’s Gala at the Peabody Hotel on December 30 at 7 pm. Each year, this award is presented to an individual or group who has exhibited excellence in their chosen field. Past recipients include Little Richard, B.B. King, David Porter, Lou Rawls, Clint Black and Alabama.

The Beach Boys amazing story and string of hit songs began in 1961 when Mike Love penned the groups’ first hit, "Surfin’". Love co-authored an incredible eleven Top 10 singles in the five years between 1963 and 1968, including "Fun, Fun, Fun", "I Get Around", "Help Me Rhonda", "California Girls”" and the Grammy nominated "Good Vibrations". More recently, Love showed he still had the lyrical golden touch by co-writing the irresistible and chart-topping "Kokomo", which in 1988 became The Beach Boys best selling single ever.

The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut in the 1960’s. The Beach Boys play an astoundingly busy schedule of concerts, averaging 150 shows a year, ranging from Live Aid, the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Anniversary Salute, the Super Bowl and the White House. The Beach Boys have not taken a summer off in 40 years, performing more shows than any other major rock act.

The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame in 1988. They were honored at the 2001 Grammy Awards, receiving The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. Rolling Stone voted "Good Vibrations" the "Number One Song of the Century".

In addition to founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-vet Bruce Johnston (vocals-keyboards) -- Mike Kowalski (drums), Randell Kirsch (guitar/vocals), Chris Farmer (bass/vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (keyboards/vocals/percussion) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band.
